EMERITUS Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong has been appointed the governing board chairman for the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKY School).

Mr Goh, whose appointment will take effect from April 1 next year, will take over from founding chairman Wang Gungwu, who has been at the helm of the school's board for 12 years.

The school said that Prof Wang has played an instrumental role in establishing and growing the school, with a recent international advisory panel rating it as "a school without peer in Asia".

The school has attracted more than 2,350 students from over 80 countries since its founding, making it the most globalised public policy school in the world.

LKY School dean Kishore Mahbubani said that Prof Wang would make it a point to attend as many school functions as possible, including valedictory dinners for graduating students, faculty research seminars and talks. "Prof Wang's approachable, humble and gracious demeanour has endeared him greatly to our school's faculty, staff and students."

He also welcomed Mr Goh to the school. "It is truly a great honour for the school's governing board to be chaired by a former prime minister of Singapore," he said. "We are confident that he will lead the school to achieve even greater success, both domestically and globally."
