In Singapore, everyone is equal before the law: PM Lee

IN Singapore, everyone is equal before the law, and the late Lee Kuan Yew understood this most of all, Singapore's prime minister Lee Hsien Loong told Parliament on Monday.

PM Lee was addressing allegations of abuse of power brought against him by his younger siblings, Lee Hsien Yang and Lee Wei Ling. The latter two have repeatedly accused PM Lee of wanting to keep their family home at 38 Oxley Road standing to inherit the late Lee Kuan Yew's credibility and bolster his standing.

"When the dust has settled on this unhappy episode, people must know that the Government operates transparently, impartially, and properly,'' PM Lee said.

"That the Government he built is able to withstand intense and sustained attacks on its reputation and integrity, and emerge not just untainted but in fact strengthened. This is the "house" that Mr Lee built, not 38 Oxley Road,'' he said, adding that he hoped one day to be able to resolve the unhappineess within the family.

Parliamentary whip of his ruling People's Action Party (PAP) - which holds 83 out of 89 seats - was lifted on Monday, allowing ministers, including Members of Parliament from the opposition, to grill PM Lee freely instead of along party lines.
