JOB openings in the United States increased to the highest level in more than 14 years, showing the labour market was solidifying gains even as the economy emerged from a first-quarter gloom.

The number of positions waiting to be filled increased by 267,000 to 5.38 million in April from a revised 5.11 million in the prior month, the Labor Department said on Tuesday.
