Push for 85% of commuters to rely mainly on public transport

Khaw: Govt aims to get there by 2050s; focus is to raise rail reliability

A TRANSPORT system that primarily relies on cars is not sustainable in land-scarce Singapore, Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan said on Thursday.

With a million private vehicles on the roads today and 12 per cent of the island's land used for roads, Singapore should follow the examples of other cities that are moving their transportation model away from private cars.

In a statement, he said that the government has already laid the foundations for a public transport system that is "reliable, convenient and affordable".

The long-term plan is to have 75 per cent of all commuters take public transport as their main mode of travel, and for this figure to reach 85 per cent by the 2050s.
