GE2015: PAP not afraid of competition in Marine Parade
EMERITUS Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong on Wednesday dismissed questions of what threat the Workers' Party might pose to the Marine Parade Group Representative Constituency (GRC), citing his 40 years of experience in the GRC.
"I would tell residents to look at their town council finances, then look at the way we run our town council. Who do you want to run your town council?"
Mr Goh was speaking to media at the official announcement of the People's Action Party (PAP) candidate line-up for the Marine Parade GRC. In addition to Mr Goh, the five-member GRC comprises new anchor minister Tan Chuan-Jin, Members of Parliament Fatimah Lateef and Seah Kian Peng, and Edwin Tong, whose current Jalan Besar ward is part of the soon-to-be-dissolved Moulmein-Kallang GRC.
Mr Tong, who will be fielded in the Joo Chiat division, said residents should not be left out of government assistance simply because they have a private home address.
Mr Goh agreed: "An issue in 2011 was that the government did not acknowledge enough the sentiment of residents living in private properties who felt left out by government schemes. But since then, the Pioneer Generation Package has been tailored for all residents regardless of where they live."
