THE Singapore Maritime Week 2016 (SMW 2016), a flagship event driven by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, was opened on Sunday by Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure & Minister for Transport Khaw Boon Wan.

In its 11th year, the event is expected to host close to 30,000 public participants and high-level delegates representing port authorities, CEOs, industry leaders and maritime specialists worldwide.

Over 30 events throughout the week to April 22 will be held at the SMW 2016 Exhibition at Marina Square.

One highlight is the Singapore Maritime Lecture with keynote speaker Kristian Siem, chairman of Siem Industries, a diversified holding company engaged in the oil and gas services industry and renewable energy sector, ocean transportation and finance.

"Amidst the global downturn in the shipping industry, SMW 2016 offers a platform for the industry to jointly address the challenges," said Mr Khaw. "If we work together, we can better overcome the problems. This year's SMW has also targeted the public, with various outreach events. They will get to know more about Singapore's maritime sector and the many career opportunities it offers."

For the first time, the Singapore Shipping Association will be bringing two offshore support vessels to the waterfront of VivoCity. The vessels will be open to the public so they can get a glimpse of these sophisticated vessels.

A new logo for Maritime Singapore was also unveiled on Sunday in a bid to forge a new identity and encourage industry players to adopt an integrated approach in supporting Singapore's maritime sector.
