Tanjung Piai petro-hub holds promise of RM12b in FDIs
Consultant deems environmental risk of project to be acceptable if mitigation measures and a management plan are incorporated; govt decision expected soon
Kuala Lumpur
A PROPOSAL to reclaim some 1,411 hectares of land for an integrated petroleum hub and maritime industrial park in south-western Johor will give Malaysia an opportunity to capture the growing demand for storage terminalling and other related activities, which, if not pursued, would lose the country an estimated RM12 billion (S$4.4 billion) in foreign direct investments.
However, the detailed environmental impact assessment report (DEIA) for this project in Tanjung Piai has noted that the nature of the reclamation would cause an irreversible change in the environment of the area to be developed.
