WHAT the US wants is a results-oriented constructive bilateral relationship with China that is based on fairness and reciprocity, a US diplomat said, even as trade tensions between the world's two largest economies worsen amid President Donald Trump's renewed threat.

"The President is focused on concluding a quality, and I would stress, a quality agreement, will not rush into an agreement that does not rebalance the trading relationship, and achieve meaningful and fully enforceable commitments to resolve structural issues," Rafik Mansour, the US chargé d'affaires for Singapore, said during a media roundtable session at the Ambassador's Residence.
