MARRY well. Live within your means. Know your risk appetite. Index funds can work, but buy markets with exposure to global growth. And don't be emotional.

These are some time-honoured personal finance and investment tips that Citi Singapore country officer and Asean head Michael Zink shared with an auditorium of hundreds of National University of Singapore (NUS) students on March 17.

One has to sit down and "learn this stuff" on stock markets, taxes and insurance, he said. "There's no magic way, no shortcut to understanding . . . you learn this just like you learn any other subject, like physics, math, English literature."
