Continuing the legacy

THE Chinese business community has played a significant role in building Singapore. They not only helped to build the economy, but also played a leadership role in the community. They have kept Chinese culture alive, instilled values in our young, and donated generously to help the needy and less able.

As we celebrate 50 years of nationhood, we must honour our outstanding pioneers. Some came from China to Singapore in search of a better life, and to support families back home. Others came from Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Taiwan, making this their home and nation. Still others were born here, children or grandchildren of immigrants, who sensed and seized the opportunities at a time of uncertainty and flux.

Whatever their backgrounds, they persevered, put their faith in Singapore, grew their businesses and raised their families here. They believed in hard work, thrift and honouring obligations. These values set the tone for our society. Their individual successes, and their collective contributions, added up to Singapore's success.
