Contributions to nation-building
A look at the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry's role in Singapore's development
SINGAPORE grew out of an immigrant community; many were migrants who had originated from hometowns in China or other parts of Asia. After residing in Singapore for many years, the Chinese in Singapore no longer saw themselves as sojourners on foreign soil but nursed plans to stay permanently in Singapore. In this regard, the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SCCCI) played a pivotal part in helping the Chinese community forge a new cultural identity and to stake claims of citizenship.
ACQUIRING CITIZENSHIP RIGHTS
It was a long hard struggle. In February 1951, the Chamber submitted, on behalf of the Chinese community, an appeal ("Memorandum to Increase the Rights of Citizenship") to raise the status of the non-naturalised Chinese, and simultaneously advocated their right to citizenship.
