More travellers are eschewing big ocean voyages for the intimacy of a sojourn along the river.

LUXURY river cruises are big news these days as more cruise operators head to more exotic waterways and put their money on smaller, specialised ships that can sail into places larger ships cannot access.
The proof is in the sailing: Research from the Cruise Lines Industry Association, for example, shows that river cruising is the fastest-growing category within the speciality cruising segment at 25 per cent growth from 2009 to 2014. Speciality cruising is made up of small-ship, river and expedition cruising.
