CONSUMER spending and industrial output in Japan moved sharply into higher gear in January, as consumers tried to get as much spending done as possible ahead of next month's increase in the national consumption tax.
The move to raise it from 5 per cent to 8 per cent from April 1 has raised economists' fears that the nation's accelerating economic recovery could be thrown into reverse as a result.
