Landslide victory paves way for reforms
President Nursultan Nazarbayev maps out challenges, goals as part of country's reforms.
KAZAKHSTAN'S incumbent President Nursultan Nazarbayev was recently re-elected with a landslide majority of 97.7 per cent in a snap election, sealing his popularity as a leader.
A record 95.2 per cent of registered voters turned out for the election. The two other candidates, Turgun Syzdykov of the Communist People's Party, and independent candidate Abelgazy Kussainov, received 1.6 per cent and 0.7 per cent of the votes respectively.
This will be Mr Nazarbayev's fifth successive term. Chairman of the Central Election Commission, Kuandyk Turgankulov, said that the vote was a landmark "expression of civil society, electoral activeness and political responsibility".
