Looking back on E50
On this 20th anniversary of the Enterprise 50 awards, we asked the former country managing director of Accenture, WILLIE CHENG, who started E50 with Patrick Daniel, editor-in-chief of SPH's English and Malay Newspapers Division, to give us his take on its inception and journey
THE year 1995 was the 20th anniversary of Andersen Consulting (now known as Accenture) in Singapore and we wanted to use the occasion to give back to the corporate community.
At that time, there was no award for privately held enterprises other than the "Enterprise of the Year" category in the Singapore Business Awards. So we thought it might be opportune to do a listing of the top local companies. I explored the concept at a lunch with Patrick Daniel, the then editor of The Business Times. He said he liked the idea: BT was then covering mostly listed companies and there was a dearth of information on the privately held ones.
However, he was rightly sceptical about whether enough of these companies would respond to the call for nominations. So, instead of a big splash, we did a soft launch - just in case there were not enough responses and we had to can the project.
