ALTHOUGH significant numbers of Singaporeans have not been to Malaysia despite its close proximity to the city state, a great many frequently head up for short weekend getaways. Especially popular with Singaporeans are Johor Bahru, Melaka and Penang.

Spotting the business and tourism potential more than a decade ago, the Hatten Group of Companies embarked on a foray into the hotel industry, with Melaka as the focal point.

Today, its maiden hotel - Hatten Hotel Melaka - is the largest premier hotel in Melaka with 704 deluxe suites and multiple awards to its name. "The hotel is currently running at 85 per cent weekly occupancy," Hatten Group of Companies group chief executive officer Edwin Tan Ping Huang says, beaming broadly.
