AS URBAN populations continue to grow at a dramatic rate, governments around the world are turning to increasingly high-tech solutions to cope with the rise in security risks faced by their cities. Around 50 per cent of the global population live in cities today, and this number is projected to reach 4.8 billion by 2025, a sharp increase of 35 per cent over 10 years.
This rapid expansion, coupled with cross-border interconnectivity and globalisation is posing challenging and complex security risks to city administrators.
"Incidents such as civil unrest, organised crime, and calamitous events have to be managed in an effective manner to minimise impact on citizens and investor confidence," said technology consultancy Frost and Sullivan in a report. High population density also strains existing resources and reduces the timeliness and effectiveness of efforts to respond to security situations.
