THE next time you have a pleasant ride on an SMRT bus, you may want to thank a system that records and analyses the driving patterns of the bus captain and sends the information back to a real-time tracking control station. Introduced last year, the telematics and big data analytics technology from NEC Asia Pacific allows SMRT to monitor and identify high-risk driving behaviour so as to enhance passenger safety and commuter experience.

The system, which has sensor indicators that will light up when a bus driver speeds for a prolonged period, accelerates or decelerates quickly, or changes lane abruptly, is utilised on SMRT's fleet of 1,100 buses. Indeed, whether you're clearing immigration at the airport, shopping at a mall or even visiting someone at the hospital, there's a chance that the technology driving these experiences were developed by NEC.
