[SINGAPORE] In a move underscoring the ruling party's intent to zero in on elderly issues, the People's Action Party (PAP) yesterday launched a new group dedicated to seniors' needs.

The unit - known as the PAP Seniors Group, or PAP.SG - will be helmed by Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob, while Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong will be its adviser.

Speaking at the party's biennial convention at Kallang Theatre yesterday morning, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said: "In Singapore, our seniors are a growing group with much to contribute, but (they) also (have) new needs which will need to be seen to. And it is our party's duty to understand them, to tap their experience and wisdom, to come up with new ideas to address these needs, and to speak up for the elderly - just as we speak up in the party for the young through YP (Young PAP), and for the women through the Women's Wing, and the other segments of the population."
