Pillars of the nation
WITHIN half a century since achieving independence in 1965, Singapore has evolved from a small fishing village into a thriving metropolis. Despite the difficult early days of independence, Chinese business pioneers of various trades and industries have played a big part in propelling the Singapore economy towards prosperity. Entrepreneurial, resilient and unafraid of hardship, these outstanding businessmen formed the cornerstone of modern Singapore.
They were also key pillars of society. On top of being captains of industry, they were role models who dedicated time and effort in service to community, culture, education and charitable projects. Their sincerity and contributions inspired Singaporeans to strive ahead.
To celebrate the momentous occasion of Singapore's 50th year of independence, the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry has established the "SG50 Outstanding Chinese Business Pioneers Awards". These awards are a tribute to outstanding Chinese business leaders who have made exemplary contributions to Singapore through the growth of their industries and in the area of service to society.
