Planning a productivity-boosting open plan office

New high performance workplaces may also help to tackle high overheads and physical constraints

IN his recent budget speech, Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam expounded on the need for the Singapore economy to restructure for the future. The next generation of businesses will have to find innovative solutions through smart and sustainable means to overcome high overheads and physical constraints.

In the rush to drive down the cost of real estate, many organisations have created open plan offices that destroy productivity and demotivate employees. These "one size fits all" solutions are better described as "one size fits nobody".

These workplaces support neither collaboration nor focused work; rather they are a cacophony of noise, distraction and interruption. These workplaces often miss the opportunity to reinforce and celebrate the values of an organisation, reinforce positive work cultures and be an effective talent management tool to support business transformation.
