SINGAPORE is the most important friend the United States has in the region partly because of the relationship of trust it has built with Washington.

The Republic's role in this relationship becomes even more important as the US seeks to increase its engagement with South-east Asia, reckons Kirk Wagar, the recently appointed US Ambassador to Singapore.
