THE old perception of the maritime industry being an old-fashioned one where nothing much really changes is rapidly vanishing.
Changes to the regulatory and market environment have led to many innovations and resulted in new technologies being taken onboard at a rapid pace. Among leading proponents of new technology use are classification societies such as DNV GL and Lloyd's Register as well as leading shipyards such as Keppel Corp and Sembcorp Marine.
Lloyd's Register (LR) said some of the key issues facing shipping came down to "a combination of regulatory compliance and performance - both to stay in business and maximise commercial advantage".
