US stocks opened sharply lower yesterday as Senate Democratic and Republican leaders remained at odds in their last-ditch negotiations to end the fiscal crises gripping Washington.
US President Barack Obama was due to meet Republican and Democratic congressional leaders at the White House on Monday, stepping up efforts to reach a deal to head off a historic debt default. Obama will make clear "the need for Congress to act to pay our bills," a White House official said on condition of anonymity.
