Wah Loon Engineering, which clinched the top spot in the Enterprise 50 awards list in 2011 after having won the award in the previous two years, has come a long way since its founding.

Established as a sole proprietorship in 1988, it started with 10 staff members. Group staff strength has grown to about 300 employees today. Its turnover has also leapt from about S$2 million in 1990 to approximately S$152 million in 2010.

Wah Loon started out as an electrical engineering company specialising in industrial buildings but it has, over the years, broadened the width and depth of its expertise to provide mechanical and engineering (M&E) services across various industries and business segments.

Now it is an integrated one-stop provider of M&E services such as extra low voltage, low voltage and high voltage electrical systems; air-conditioning and mechanical ventilation systems; and fire protection systems. The past few decades have seen the company's services stretching across and over the M&E engineering value chain to project management services to meet the full spectrum of its customers' needs.

In Wah Loon's growth story, the year 1995 stands out as a milestone as it hit double-digit turnover of S$12 million, with a staff strength of just 30. It then moved to newer and larger premises at 15 Kaki Bukit Crescent, Kaki Bukit Techpark 1. The following year, it established Wah Loon Engineering & Construction Sdn Bhd in Johor Bahru to penetrate the Malaysian construction market.

In 2000, anticipating strong demand for mechanical engineering services, Wah Loon expanded its scope of business to include the provision of mechanical engineering services.

Wah Loon moved up the construction value chain in 2003 from a sub-contractor to a main contractor to provide greater value-added services.

The next key milestone was in 2006, when Wah Loon's turnover crossed S$50 million with a staff strength of 122. The company doubled its turnover two years later to hit the S$100 million mark.

Honed by years of experience, the company's project management skills have contributed to the successful and timely execution of projects of varying sizes, complexities and timelines.
