THREE years ago, when home-grown beverage and food company Yeo Hiap Seng (YHS) decided to expand its Singapore plant, raising productivity levels along with safety and quality was high on its agenda. The listed company was looking to add a new retort canning line catered for the local and export markets.

The retort canning line is used to produce non-carbonated Asian flavoured drinks. Even though the production cost would be lower by expanding its plant in Malaysia, YHS saw the opportunity to expand an automated plant in Singapore.

The company felt that the products made in Singapore would give an assurance of better and higher quality to the consumer due to the high regulatory standards, says Melvin Teo, Group CEO of Yeo Hiap Seng Limited, which is one of the SPA winners this year.
