Myanmar’s gas exports plunge 23%, deepening its financial and energy woes
Analysts say the decline signals possible end of the country’s lucrative gas era
[BANGKOK] Myanmar’s natural gas exports to Thailand deflated by 23 per cent in the six months to March this year, prompting analysts to suggest this may signal the end of Myanmar’s nearly 30-year “gas era” of lucrative exports to Thailand and China.
Myanmar’s overall exports from October 2023 to March 2024 – the second half of the country’s fiscal year – dipped 13 per cent, while imports fell 20 per cent, according to fresh data released on Wednesday (Jun 12).
The figures were included in the World Bank’s latest economic report on Myanmar, which has seen escalating conflicts since late last year now affecting half of the country’s 330 townships.
