Asia Economic Summit 2025: Navigating innovation, policy in Asean

THE Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) is at a crossroads. Its digital economy surged to US$263 billion in gross merchandise value in 2024, marking a 15 per cent year-on-year growth. AI-driven innovations are reshaping e-commerce, while investment interest in the region remains high.

Indonesia’s investment market is seeing significant momentum, with total direct investment reaching US$105 billion in 2024, a 20.8 per cent increase from the previous year. Similarly, Singapore attracted US$10 billion in fixed asset investments in 2024, up 6.3 per cent from 2023. This increase reflects the city-state’s role as a key hub for regional and global capital flows.

But with this rapid growth comes heightened scrutiny. Recent corporate scandals, like high-profile fraud allegations, are making investors rethink risk and forcing startups to reassess their governance practices. As these ripples spread across the region, securing funding has become more complex.
