Australia's April retail sales beat forecasts: preliminary data

[SYDNEY] Australian retailers enjoyed stronger-than-expected sales in April, led by a jump in food retailing, preliminary data on Friday showed.
Retail turnover rose 1.1 per cent in April, according to figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), while median forecasts of economists polled by Reuters had shown a 0.5 per cent increase.
Final results will be released on June 3.
