CHANGI Airport will be operational with three runways “by the latter half of this decade”, increasing the airport’s current flight handling capacity and the corresponding passenger capacity by more than one-third, Transport Minister S Iswaran said in a written reply to a parliamentary question on Tuesday (Oct 4).
Previously, Changi Airport Group had said that it expected to operationalise a three-runway system by the mid-2020s.
Iswaran was responding to a question by Workers’ Party (WP) Member of Parliament (MP) Louis Chua (Sengkang GRC), who asked for an update.
Separately, Trade and Industry Minister Gan Kim Yong, in response to a question by People’s Action Party MP Darryl David (Ang Mo Kio GRC) about plans to boost tourism given the strong Singapore dollar, noted that the Republic’s visitor arrivals reached three million in the first eight months of the year, “nearly 20 times more compared to the same period in 2021”.
“When compared to nine key competitor cities, Singapore remains the top destination for both leisure and business travellers in the Singapore Tourism Board’s Brand Health Survey of Singapore’s top 15 markets,” he said.
