THE Chinese Grand Prix will not take place in 2023 due to “ongoing difficulties stemming from the Covid-19 situation”, said the Formula 1 on Friday (Nov 2).

The 24-race Formula 1 calendar for 2023 announced on Sep 20 included a Grand Prix in China in April. The organisation said it is assessing alternatives to replace the slot, and will provide an update in due course.

The Covid-19 situation in China remains difficult, even though Beijing has allowed some virus-infected people to isolate at home, starting with those in the city’s most-populous district. This was a landmark shift that reflected the pressure that officials were under from a record outbreak and public opposition to the Covid Zero policy. BLOOMBERG
