Criminal Legal Aid Scheme founder Harry Elias dies
SENIOR Counsel (SC) Harry Elias, 83, who spearheaded the setting up of the Law Society's Criminal Legal Aid Scheme (CLAS), passed away on Wednesday.
The CLAS is meant to help the less fortunate obtain free legal representation.
In a statement on Thursday, Mr Elias' law firm, Harry Elias Partnership, said the litigation lawyer was known for his "compassion and contribution to society".
Managing partner Philip Fong said: "For our firm, Harry was our founder, leader and mentor. For our profession, Harry was the epitome of a fearless and first-class advocate. For our society, Harry was a trailblazer with lasting legacy.
"For us personally, Harry was a true friend, a teacher and a kind and generous soul. We are honoured to have walked with him for a part of his impactful life."
Mr Elias was one of the first 12 lawyers appointed SC in 1997.

In 2005, he was given the CC Tan Award, which is conferred by the Law Society of Singapore in recognition and honour of members of the Singapore Bar who have displayed the highest ideals of the profession.
