Four dead, 8 hurt in shooting attack in Kentucky city
FOUR people were dead and eight hurt in a shooting attack in downtown Louisville, Kentucky, near its Slugger Field baseball stadium on Monday (Apr 10), the city’s police department said.
Paul Humphrey, the deputy chief of the Louisville Metro Police Department, said the gunman, who was not identified, was confirmed to be among the dead.
“We’re trying to confirm if that suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound or was killed by officers,” he said.
The police said they received calls about a shooting at Old National Bank around 8.30 am and when they arrived on the scene, “active gunshots were still being fired inside the location”. People were warned to stay away from the scene.
The eight who were hurt included two police officers who were wounded in the exchange of gunfire, Humphrey added.
The FBI said its agents had responded to the scene in the city, which has a population of 625,000 people.
Initial reports had put the number of victims at five, but the police clarified that the number had included the gunman as well.
An eyewitness told WDRB, a local Fox TV affiliate: “I was at the stop light, and the first thing that I saw – there was a guy across the street at the intersection, and he was lying down at the entrance to a hotel.” AFP, REUTERS
