France warns Italy that EU budget rules 'same for every country'
[LUXEMBOURG]French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire warned Italy Monday that every member of the eurozone must abide by the EU's budget rules, just days after Rome promised a big spending boost in defiance of Brussels.
"I just want to make very clear that there are rules and the rules are the same for every state, because our futures are linked," Le Maire told reporters ahead of a meeting of eurozone finance ministers.
Italy's new coalition government last week spooked the financial markets by drafting a 2019 budget that raises spending and appears to ignore Rome's promises of debt reduction and belt-tightening.
