G-20 warns on variants, Thailand's record deaths

[VENICE] Finance ministers and central bankers from the world's biggest economies plan to warn that coronavirus variants present continued risks to growth even as the overall outlook brightens, according to a draft communique seen by Bloomberg News.

Infections are rising across most regions of the world as the delta variant spreads, the World Health Organization's chief scientist said.

Thailand on Saturday reported a record 91 deaths from the virus, cases climbed in Sydney, the Netherlands reimposed curbs to control another outbreak, and the reproduction rate in England rose to levels not seen since October.

In the US, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention eased guidance for schools, giving them more flexibility to decide how to safely keep kids in kindergarten through 12th-grade classrooms while guarding against the further spread of Covid-19.
