GE2015: Campaign should focus on issues concerning Singapore's future, says PM Lee

[SINGAPORE] Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong hopes the nine-day campaign period for the general election (GE) will focus on the issues and important questions concerning the future of Singapore.

However, he said it was "unavoidable" that the temperature would go up during the hustings, which start on Tuesday and run all the way until Sept 9.

"(It's) not just what we are going to do, but who's going to do it. What's the character, the record, the abilities and the shortcomings of the candidates? These are issues that do have to be discussed in the campaign," he told reporters at Raffles Institution, shortly after his People's Action Party (PAP) team filed their nomination papers to contest in Ang Mo Kio group representation constituency (GRC).

Mr Lee's team comprises Intan Azura Mohktar, Gan Thiam Poh, Ang Hin Kee, Darryl David and Koh Poh Koon. They will face the Reform Party, comprising M Ravi, Roy Ngerng, Gilbert Goh, Osman Sulaiman, Jesse Loo and Siva Chandran.

When asked if the opposition as a whole was stronger this year, Mr Lee said: "They will try their best and it's our job to try our best and to win a strong support and mandate from the voters."
