GE2015: PAP wins Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC with 73.59% of votes
[SINGAPORE] The People's Action Party (PAP) team led by Minister for Defence Ng Eng Hen won 73.59 per cent of the votes in the Bishan-Toa Payoh constituency, where it fielded three new candidates.
PAP's winning margin is 16.7 percentage points higher than the 56.9 per cent of votes it garnered four years ago even though it is squaring off with the Singapore People's Party (SPP) consisting of two opposition veterans from the 2011 election.
Democratic Progressive Party chief Benjamin Pwee, 47, and chairman Hamim Aliyas, 50, had both resigned from the party and joined the SPP so they could be fielded.
PAP's team comprises new faces Chee Hong Tat, Chong Kee Hiong and Saktiandi Supaat as well as Senior Minister of State for Transport and Finance Josephine Teo.
A total 117,563 valid votes were cast in the GRC, of which 86,514 went to the PAP team and 31,049 or 26.41 per cent went to the SPP team.
