GE2020: PAP retains seat in Pioneer with 61.98%

THE People's Action Party's (PAP) Patrick Tay captured 61.98 per cent of the votes cast to win in Pioneer in the only three-cornered fight in an SMC in the 2020 General Election.

Mr Tay, 48, beat Progress Singapore Party's Lim Cher Hong (35.24 per cent), 42, a chartered financial consultant; and independent candidate Cheang Peng Wah (2.78 per cent), 62, a business consultant.

23,510 (95.29 per cent) of the 24,672 voters registered in Pioneer turned up, with 350 rejected / spoilt votes. The turnout for the 2015 General Election was 95.2 percent in Pioneer SMC, with 2.7 per cent spoilt votes.

PAP incumbent Cedric Foo, 59, who has retired from politics, trounced the National Solidarity Party's Elvin Ong Beng Soon in the 2015 General Election to win 76.34 per cent of the votes cast. He had been the Member of Parliament for Pioneer since 2001, first when it was part of West Coast GRC and later a SMC.

Mr Tay, who is an assistant secretary-general at the National Trades Union Congress, was first elected as an MP for Nee Soon GRC in 2011. In 2015, he was re-elected as MP but in the West Coast GRC.
