GE2020: PAP's Gan Siow Huang and PSP's Ang Yong Guan face off in Marymount SMC

THE new single-seat ward of Marymount will see a contest between the ruling People's Action Party's (PAP) Gan Siow Huang and the Progress Singapore Party's (PSP) Ang Yong Guan.

Ms Gan, Singapore's first female brigadier-general and one of PAP's new faces for the July 10 election, made a surprise appearance at Deyi Secondary School, one of nine Nomination Centres across Singapore, shortly past 9.30am. She was initially tipped to be running for Bishan Toa-Payoh GRC.

Dr Ang, who arrived at about 10.45am, is a psychiatrist contesting under the PSP banner for the first time. This is his third General Election, having contested as a member of the Singapore Democratic Party in 2011 and the Singaporeans First party in 2015.

The candidacy of Ms Gan and Dr Ang was confirmed at 12.30pm.

In their thank-you speeches, Ms Gan said that PAP MPs have served residents of Marymount and walking together with them right from the start.

"We have built one of the best and most beautiful towns in Singapore. We have forged strong community bonds over the years. Vote for PAP so that we can continue to serve you," she said.

Dr Ang called on voters to support PSP and the other alternative parties to help them secure at least 32 seats in Singapore's next Parliament, which would deny the PAP a two-thirds majority in the House.

Marymount SMC was part of Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC for the 2015 GE and was previously served by Manpower Minister Josephine Teo. It was then carved out as an SMC after Bishan-Toa Payoh got downsized to a four-member GRC.
