THE global issue of talent crunch faced by companies everywhere has forced them to turn towards overseas labour — as global hiring rates across all regions rose 145 per cent, with Asia Pacific (APAC) emerging as the second fastest-growing region for companies hiring abroad.

According to Deel’s State of Global Hiring H1 2022 report published on Wednesday (Jul 27), hiring remotely for Asia Pacific grew as much as 159 per cent from January to June this year, just a few per cent shy from Latin America, which topped the rankings with a 161 per cent increase.

On a regional breakdown, the top 3 fastest-growing countries in APAC by the organisations’ rate of hiring since H2 2021 are Australia, Singapore and India — with global hiring rates rising by 292, 170 and 158 per cent respectively.

Companies in the region also tend to prefer employing remote workers from the Philippines, India and Pakistan.

In Singapore, employers prefer seeking international talents from the Philippines, India, United States, Indonesia and Canada. Rate of growth in hiring workers from these places went up between 4 and 12 per cent in H1 2022.

The top roles that these companies hire for includes: virtual assistance, software engineers, software developers, content writers and community managers.

Meanwhile, Singaporean talents are also aggressively hunted by those abroad.

“The USA, United Kingdom, Canada, Israel and Virgin Islands represent the top countries currently hiring Singapore talent, with sales and software engineer roles being the highest paying roles offered,” wrote researchers in the latest report from Deel.

Salaries too, are on the rise, amidst the aggressive hiring from employers all over the world.

Countries like India, Brazil and Italy topped the list with the fastest-growing salary increases, particularly for support, finance and content roles.

Across all job titles, the top APAC countries with highest percentage of salary increase were India with a 158 per cent wage growth as well as Philippines and Thailand, which both saw salaries rise by 104 per cent.

“Businesses must continue reinventing the way they communicate, operate, hire and retain employees by pivoting to remote and flexible working arrangements,” said Karen Ng, regional head of expansion & market lead Hong Kong, Singapore, Asean, India.

“This has lent organisations the much-needed agility and efficiency to tackle a myriad of pain points – from addressing the challenges of talent crunch exacerbated by border restrictions, to accommodating growing employee demands for workplace flexibility.”
