EXPRESSING his condolences on the death of former West German chancellor Helmut Schmidt, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said Mr Schmidt was a "visionary leader" and a close friend of Singapore.

"He had a strategic view of the world, and was a strong supporter of closer relations between our two countries," said Mr Lee in his condolence letter to German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday.
