[LONDON] The International Monetary Fund’s No 2 official Dan Katz will travel to China to join a mission conducting an annual review of the country’s economy, according to people familiar with the matter.

He is expected to join policy discussions and meet government officials in Beijing, the people added, asking not to be identified because the information is not public. It would be Katz’s first trip to the country since he was appointed as deputy managing director of the IMF in early October.

The consultation is expected to take place in early December, one of the people added.

It’s not uncommon for the IMF’s top deputy to visit China during what are known as Article IV consultations. The previous holder of the post, Gita Gopinath, travelled to the country in 2023 and 2024 for that purpose.

Katz, a former investment banker at Goldman Sachs Group, was chief of staff to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent for much of this year before being appointed to the IMF. He also served at the Treasury Department during US President Donald Trump’s first term. BLOOMBERG
