JAPAN issued a tsunami warning for its almost all of its western coast after a powerful earthquake with a magnitude 7.6 hit off the Noto Peninsula about 300 km from Tokyo on Monday (Jan 1).

A tsunami of more than one metre hit the town of Wajima, public broadcaster NHK said. A further tsunami as large as 5 metres could hit Ishikawa prefecture, NHK said. Announcers urged people in the areas to flee to higher ground and away from the coast.

The earthquake was large enough to be felt in Tokyo.

However, around 33,500 households were without power around the epicentre of a series of major earthquakes in central Japan, local utilities said. BLOOMBERG, AFP
