JAPANESE billionaire Yusaku Maezawa tweeted on Monday (Dec 5) that he will make a “big announcement about space” on Friday (Dec 9) after an online meeting with SpaceX owner Elon Musk.
The 47-year-old entrepreneur, who founded online fashion retailer Zozo, will likely become the first private passenger on a SpaceX moon mission planned for 2023, which will entail a week-long fly-by. Last December, Maezawa completed a tourist trip to the International Space Station on a Soyuz spacecraft.
His upcoming plan to journey around the moon with Musk’s rocket and satellite company signals a new age of space travel for wealthy clients. Commercial firms such as Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin is one of the players in this space.
Maezawa made his fortune through Zozo, which was bought by Softbank Group’s Internet business.
After Maezawa’s tweet, shares in Inclusive, a Japan-based company which utilises satellite data to provide space-related business, soared 11.7 per cent to close at 1,171 yen (S$11.69). REUTERS
