Macron rebuffs Trump’s threats of wine tariffs as G7 meets
Trump had threatened to impose 100 per cent tariffs on French wines
FRENCH President Emmanuel Macron refused to drop the country’s digital tax after Donald Trump threatened new tariffs on wine, creating a potential standoff as the two leaders gather for the Group of Seven meeting in Evian.
“This digital tax, which several European countries have decided on and implemented, is part of our law,” Macron said on TF1 television from the G7. “It’s not the US that decides European or French law — that’s normal and it won’t be any different, at least as long as I am around.”
Trump told the New York Post in an interview published earlier that the US will “have no choice” but to impose 100 per cent tariffs on French wines if France does not drop its digital tax on US tech companies.
“We’ll have a respectful but firm discussion,” Macron said.
The White House did not respond to inquiries about Macron’s response or elaborate on Trump’s threat. BLOOMBERG
