PERMANENT secretary for the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) Chew Hock Yong will succeed Lim Ming Yan as chairman of Workforce Singapore (WSG) from Oct 1, said the Ministry of Manpower in an announcement on Friday (Sep 16).

This comes after the announcement that Chew would be retiring from MHA on Nov 1 after being in public service for more than 3 decades.

Since the reconstitution of the Workforce Development Agency (WDA) into WSG, Lim was the first chairman under WSG.

Under Lim’s leadership, WSG played a part in helping to place more than 24,000 locals in new jobs through career conversion programmes over the last 3 years — a 62 per cent increase from the previous 3 years.

Lim also played a key role in steering WSG to support jobseekers during the Covid-19 pandemic as the organisation launched the SGUnited Traineeship and SGUnited 2 Mid-Career Pathways – Company Attachment programmes in 2020 to provide more opportunities for jobseekers amid disruptions to the labour market.

Thanking Lim, Ng Chee Khern, permanent secretary, Ministry of Manpower said: “Since the establishment of WSG, Ming Yan has served as Chairman of the WSG Board, and his leadership has been critical in steering WSG in its mission to help Singaporeans take on quality jobs, as well as help enterprises in their business and workforce transformation journey.”

Ng also welcomed Chew into the new role as he believes the latter’s leadership experience and deep insights into the public sector will be valuable in leading the board in the next lap.
