Migration control a must, says UK Brexit Secretary

BREXIT Secretary David Davis has disclosed the first clear direction on how the UK would conduct exit negotiations with the other 27 European Union (EU) states - with emphasis on the referendum vote demanding control of migration. The UK's intended border control would thus not be up for negotiation.

In his first evidence session with the parliamentary Brexit committee, Mr Davis said that this would imply that the UK would not accept the EU's requirement of free movement of people. Since EU leaders have stated that free trade, services, capital and people are essential requirements, the UK government would negotiate on the basis that if it cannot have its own policy on migration, it is prepared to leave the single market. This would be the so-called "hard" or "clean break" Brexit.
