SINGAPORE must avoid a situation in which government policies, especially those that involve financial subsidies for the people, turn into an "auction" during national elections, said Social and Family Development Minister Chan Chun Sing on Monday.
"We have seen this happen in many countries all over the world. In trying to get elected, somebody will stand up and say he promises more than the next guy. And after a while, the whole system unravels," he said at an annual forum organised by the Institute of Policy Studies.
