THE Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has formed an alliance with industry players to equip the maritime workforce with new skills as the industry transforms.
The tie-up, called Alliance for Future Maritime Talent, has been sealed with the Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF), in partnership with Pacific Carriers Limited, Pacific International Lines and the American Bureau of Shipping.
The formation of the alliance was announced by Minister for Transport and Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations S Iswaran at the Singapore Shipping Association’s anniversary gala dinner on Friday (Sep 23).
In a joint statement following the announcement, MPA and SMF said the alliance will put Singapore in a favourable position in the face of global competition for maritime talent.
The alliance will work closely with the industry and unions to implement and review the adoption of emerging future maritime skills in the sector, including key seafaring and shore-based maritime skills. Skills needed to enable more effective sea-to-shore transition of seafarers will be covered as well.
Apart from the alliance’s formation, Iswaran also announced the setting up of a tripartite advisory panel to support the alliance in engaging stakeholders and gathering industry feedback. This panel will consult unions and industry leaders to identify emerging and future skills, as well as relevant competencies for the maritime industry, MPA and SMF said.
