No immediate decision to demolish Lee Kuan Yew's Oxley Road house: PM Lee
There is no need to make an immediate decision regarding the demolition of the house owned by Singapore's founding prime minister, Lee Kuan Yew, said his eldest son, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, in parliament on Monday.
Mr Lee Kuan Yew's daughter, Lee Wei Ling, will continue to live in the house, located at 38 Oxley Road, for the time being. As such, there is also no need for the government to make any decision on the demolition for now, said the prime minister in a ministerial statement.
The late Mr Lee, who died last month at the age of 91, had stated in his will that he wanted his house demolished after his death.
"If and when Dr Lee Wei Ling no longer lives in the house, Mr Lee has stated his wishes as to what then should be done," said PM Lee. "At that point, speaking as a son, I would like to see these wishes carried out. However, it will be up to the government of the day to consider the matter."
On Sunday, Dr Lee Wei Ling and her younger brother Mr Lee Hsien Yang - the executors of Mr Lee's will - issued a statement asking Singaporeans to support and respect their father's wishes.
